Bulgarian outside hitter and one of the world’s best players, Matey Kaziyski, currently owns the world record with the fastest spike ever recorded by a male volleyball player according to an article published in La Gazzetta dello Sport’s weekly magazine SportWeek. BB hit the ball at 132km/hour which is faster than a water polo throw and a softball pitch.

Canadian volleyball player Sharone Vernon-Evans recorded a spike-hit height of 12’6.5″ (382 cm) at the National Training Center in Gatinearu this week, which is believed to be the second-highest touch in the history of the sport. And he’s just 18 years old. Vernon-Evans’ jump is just 2 cm below the touch of legendary Cuban volleyballer Leonel Marshall, who touched at 384cm.
The average speed of a volleyball spike in men’s and women’s competitive play ranges from 50 to 70 miles per hour. The fastest speed ever recorded is 82 mph, set by Bulgarian professional Matey Kaziyski.
Even the tallest volleyball player doesn’t spike that high. A full list of the tallest players is here. What we also remember him is his powerful serves. In the fastest one, he served 132.9 km/h (82.58 mph). It was during the Italian Cup game Trentino Volley – Bre Banca Cuneo in 2010 (31.01). Back then it came out to be the world record.
